ADW: Proteus anguinus: INFORMATIO

This species occurs in large subterranean aquatic karst systems formed in limestone and dolomite rocks, and may be found in cave entrances. The species is found in waters ranging from 5-15°C. They feed on detritus and endemic cave vertebrates and hide in crevices or bottom sediment when disturbed Proteusencounters numerous microorganisms and a variety of parasites and other symbionts in its natural environment as well as opportunistic pathogens in captivity. Understanding the interactions between Proteus, its microbiome and parasites is crucial for the recognition of potential health threats to this amphibian The Proteus anguinus or the cave salamander is a rare amphibian with an unusual appearance, shaped by several million years of living in dark caves in central Europe. It's skin lacks pigment, giving its body a white, pasty appearance. It also has a pink hue due to blood capillaries near the skin, and as its translucency shows the contours of the internal organs Proteus Genome Project Proteus anguinus, also known as the olm, the European cave salamander or simply proteus, is the World's largest four-legged cave animal, which can only be found in the caves of the Dinaric Karst in the western Balkans.Proteus is not only the iconic animal of Slovenia and a symbol of its biodiversity, natural heritage and pure natural water resources Proteus anguinus lives in the subterranean fresh water biotopes of the Dinaric Karst, from the Isonzo-Soca River in south-eastern Venezia Guilia, Italy through the southern half of Slovenia, southern Croatia, and parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Trebisnjica River in eastern Herzegovina (Sket 1997). It has been introduced in the Parolini Grotto, Vicenza, northern Italy and Tular near.

Proteus anguinus lives in subterranean waters, and is therefore a difficult subject for field observations. It occurs in caves that are accessible to humans, but as these hardly contain any adults, these caves must be seen as marginal parts of the biotope. Most observations on the life history of this salamander were made in captivity

Life and development in complete darkness for a strictly cavernicolous Urodele species such as Proteus raises the problem of orientation and environmental perception. An experimental study of olfaction in Proteus anguinus was undertaken on two complementary aspects: (a) a anatomical and ultrastructural aspect (photon and electron microscopy); and (b) a behavioural aspect, by testing Proteus.
